As a child, Paolo Kernahan had a passion for reading and storytelling. After completing his studies he began a career in TV journalism. After this, he created his own television programming.

And now, with more than 25 years in broadcast journalism, he is now an On-Camera Coach and Instructor.

Read on to more about him and his DIY Video Marketing Strategy.

1. Tell us about your life journey, Paolo?

I live on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean where I grew up. As a child I had a passion for reading and storytelling; two traits I inherited from my father.

I started writing as a teenager and continued my interest in literature at University in Canada. When I returned to Trinidad after completing my studies I began a career in TV journalism.

I eventually branched out to create my own television programming which then evolved to web content creation for private clients. That’s my story in a nutshell.

2. What prompted you to become a Video Marketing Consultant?

When I was creating my own television programmes I had to market the shows myself. The cost of conventional advertising (newspaper adverts) was horrifying.

With a limited budget, I turned to using my own cameras and social media to spread the word about my programmes.

After having done that for several years I thought, why not offer that service to clients who are trying to break into digital marketing?

3. How one can speak confidently in front of a camera?

There are several techniques to speaking with confidence on camera. If I had to boil it down to 3 simple steps it would be these:

1) Focus on the camera not as a menace, but as a tool to raise the profile of your business and boost revenues. Change your mindset about appearing on camera.

2) Learn as much as you can about your industry/profession or particular field. Being comfortable with your subject matter and having a good grasp of the material is the best antidote for on-camera jitters.

Ideally, if you fill your mind with knowledge about what you want to speak about you will leave no space for nervousness.

3) Practice as often as you can in front of the camera. Review your recordings and look for areas where you can improve.

Don’t forget to be on the lookout for elements of your presentation that you like. Personal positive reinforcement is a huge motivating factor.

4. How Marketers and Entrepreneurs can adopt a DIY video marketing strategy?

DIY video marketing is an excellent, cost-effective way to raise your brand profile and bring more customers into the fold.

Entrepreneurs tend to shy away from it, either because they are afraid of going on camera or have mistaken ideas about the costs associated with creating video content.

Anyone can start to produce video content themselves inexpensively. The first port of call that I would recommend would be training.

If you learn on-camera confidence and the methods for sustainable video content creation you can save yourself a tremendous amount of time starting up your own video marketing strategies.

There are countless ebooks and online courses that are structured in a way to give busy entrepreneurs a simple introduction to DIY video marketing and techniques that they can apply to their businesses almost immediately.

As far as equipment goes, start small. Begin with your smartphone and work your way up from there.

The beautiful thing about doing training for DIY video marketing is that the more you learn about the proper techniques for effective video content creation, the cheaper it is to do it.

In the world of video production, technique is always more important than equipment.

5. What advice you would like to give to Video Marketers who want to use video content to create opportunities?

I would recommend a few things. Don’t wait until conditions are perfect to get started. The timing will never be right, the money will never be there, and the resources will always seem insufficient.

Do the training and start small. As more revenue rolls in and more resources become available you can step up your game.

Don’t delay your business goals by waiting for some unattainable measure of perfection to materialise.

Also, there are more videos online than ever before as entrepreneurs are tapping into the power of the medium to grow their prospects.

What that means is that it’s getting more difficult to get attention online as platforms become more crowded.

It is more important than ever to invest the time in learning how to create video content that will stand out above the noise.

Learning how to speak confidently and with clarity in your videos will set you apart from the millions of just-average videos circulating the internet.

Paolo has also created a camera confidence course designed to help entrepreneurs speak with poise and confidence on camera and command the attention of customers. Please visit his course page here: Camera Confidence

Top 25 Video Marketing Disruptors (Globally) in 2019

1. Tell us about your life journey, in brief, Rishabh?

I was born in Jodhpur and raised in a middle-class typical baniya family. Studied in Hindi Medium school.

Found my first passion in Hindi Poetry, published the first book at age of 16. Later combined Poetry & Chemistry to publish my second book.

I then joined IIT Bombay for graduation & PG, post which I did consulting, started a venture in ed-tech space, raised multiple rounds of funding and scaled it to multiple cities. Recently, I started a YouTube channel – Labour law Advisor which has 850K+ subscribers.

My story at Josh Talks Stage:

2. Youtube channel on Labour Law? Isn’t that unusual?

Yes, we make videos related to career, finance, and most unusual labour laws.

It’s unusual because neither of us ( me and my partner Mandeep) are either an advocate or CA. My family is into labour law consulting business, which has been running for the last 42 years. My grandfather always had this dream that this business should be continued.

Being an engineer, I had zero experience or interest in the subject. I found it complex as well as boring. One day I thought let’s read about a topic and make a video on the same, this way I might be motivated enough.

When I read, I found these acts very simple. It’s the language and lack of better explanation made them complex. Maybe the lawmakers had done that deliberately. So I made the first video explaining the act in simple layman language. That’s how the journey started.

3. What are some of the Youtube growth hacks you learned for growing your channel?

When we started the channel, we never thought that a channel about labour law would ever reach even 10k subs. But with God’s grace and a lot of trials and errors the channel started getting traction.

I have a 3-words mantra when it comes to YouTube success – Quality, Consistency, and Innovation. We also used a lot of growth hacks, many of them gave splendid results. Today the family is of 850k+ subscribers.

4.  What is your thought process and story behind organising ThinkVid?

Our YouTube journey started without any mentor or training. We learned everything by trial and error.

We still have a lot of questions without answers. When you start your YouTube channel, as a beginner you have multiple questions like – How to do video SEO? How to get advertisers? How much to quote? How to gain subscribers quickly? How much money you can make from a partner programme etc.

To solve these issues for budding YouTubers, we are bringing India’s biggest YouTube celebs on a single-stage, where they will be sharing their success secrets. The event is not 7th March, 2020 at Clarks Amer Jaipur. More details can be

5.  What would be your advice to newbies for growing Youtube channel or Youtube Marketing strategy?

I’ll again share my 3-words mantra – Quality, Consistency, and Innovation. It’s always difficult in the beginning but bright days are never far.

Find a good mentor, don’t miss any chance to learn and collaborate as often as possible. These things will help you to shorten the period of becoming a Verified creator.

The main learning I have is to achieve the scale you have to be open to different structures and partnerships rather than be stuck on only one model (e.g. Must create everything in-house, or Must outsource everything) – Mike Melli, Co-founder & CRO – MissMalini.com

For the uninitiated, MissMalini.com is a prominent  Lifestyle blogging/Vlogging news media portal, a one-stop destination for all – movies, fashion, and lifestyle stuff.

Started with text content Mike understood that in this dynamic digital era, Video is the future of content. Currently, the MissMalini Youtube channel has 500K+ subscribers and 150Mn+ views.

We talked to Mike to learn how he and his team achieved that scale. Read on to know more about Mike, his learnings from creating branded video content and what lies ahead for Video Marketers.

Check out – Top 25 Global Video Marketing Disruptors

Q. Tell us about your life journey, Mike?

I was always drawn to leadership starting in childhood from my time in the Boy Scouts where I eventually attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

I grew up and lived in Connecticut, USA before going to school near Boston at Babson College where I studied marketing and entrepreneurship.

And I started my first business when I was 13, and by the time I was 20 most of my friends were working for me in one of my businesses or the other.

Out of college, I was accepted into a competitive marketing leadership program at EMC (now Dell-EMC), where I worked for 5 years before shifting into the entertainment industry and eventually moving to India in 2009.

I co-founded MissMalini Entertainment in early 2011, and I have been leading the business side of the company as Chief Revenue Officer since then.

Get updated with Latest Video Marketing News

Q. How did you shift from written to video content?

Aside from just personally loving to watch movies and television, my interest professionally in video content was born out of necessity.

I was running a media company that started mostly as written content on MissMalini.com, but by 2013 it was clear to us that video was the future of content, so we have been investing in video and building our capabilities ever since.

By the end of 2014, we had ‘graduated’ from digital videos into long-form content on Television.

I have since produced 6 full seasons of television program as executive producer – 2 seasons of MissMalini’s World on TLC, 1 season of Kya SEEN Hai on Zoom, 2 seasons of Inside Access on VH1/Voot, and one season of The Girl Tribe on Facebook, which is being scaled up to a major OTT platform this year.

This is in addition to our core business of branded content videos, of which we have produced 100’s over the years for various brands.

I also became interested in mainline video, so last year we launched a sister company to MissMalini called Agent M Creative, which is a full service mainline creative agency.

We have produced TVC’s for brands like Urban Clap, Imagica, Saavn, Bosch, Franklin Templeton, India Gate, and others.

Learn from Video Marketing experts

Q. Please take us through your learning of creating video content at scale.

The main learning I have is to achieve the scale you have to be open to different structures and partnerships rather than be stuck on only one model (e.g. Must create everything in-house, or Must outsource everything).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMJ1iug0RyA

Hiring full-time talent, especially at a senior level, is extremely challenging because most talents can make more money as freelancers.

This challenge has been accentuated by the big push from companies like Netflix and Amazon because they also have an advantage in attracting top talent.

Other key learning is that in video production, you are truly on as strong as your weakest link because even someone in a ‘junior position’ can cause massive shoot delays, or even disrupt the final product.

(I am reminded of a rather expensive shoot that actually went quite well, but then one assistant was careless and lost all the SD cards in a rickshaw causing us to have to do an entire re-shoot). So processes and accountability are very important to instill throughout the entire organization.

And one last big learning pertaining to branded video content – it is an absolute fact that there will be disputes between the brand team and the creative team (and even more so when there are influencers/celebrities involved).

Producing branded content successfully at scale is not possible without strong creative teams AND strong client servicing teams who can work through issues in good faith to find solutions.

Are you a video marketing expert? Take this quiz

Q. Can you share the story behind your most successful video?

It’s hard to choose one, so I’ll mention a few.

A) On the creative side, I am most proud of MissMalini’s award-winning short film (2nd place out of 1500 entries) for the India Film Project.

In this case, the entire conceptualization, production, and editing had to be done in 48 hours, and with a shoe-string budget.

https://www.facebook.com/IndiaFilmProject/videos/183337575898293/?t=0&v=183337575898293

B) In television, my favorite video was Season 1, Episode 1 of Inside Access on Vh1 & Voot (it can be viewed along with the whole season if you are on Voot).

This one stands out because we had a unique opportunity to shoot with Chris Martin of Coldplay while he was in India.

Of course it came with almost no notice, and actually before production for the show had properly begun.

So it was a logistical miracle that we got everything in place, and the output of our first episode on a Viacom channel was fantastic with a great storyline we wove to fit with the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai. And the episode had great ratings 🙂

C) Regarding branded content, my favorite set of videos is a TV ad campaign we did for Urban Clap.

It’s a project near and dear to us because we conceptualized a unique stylization for television that borrowed from a popular digital/smartphone feature, which was the ‘boomerang’ feature.

The ad campaign was recognized by the industry and won great praise from the client like the most innovative and buzz-worthy campaign ever launched by the company.

Q. What according to you is the future of Video Marketing?

This question can have a whole book written about it and is the subject of countless panels and conferences, so there is no one easy answer to this.

We focus on a few key macro indicators to predict where video marketing is going.

A) The sheer volume of content clutter means that quality does in fact matter.

There are many use cases for low-budget or ‘self-shot’ video content, so that won’t fade away, but for big campaigns and key assets, quality does matter.

That’s visual quality AND audio quality (which is more important than most people think).

B) The rapid decentralization of platforms requires all marketers to broaden the range of formats & styles of videos they create.

“With newer platforms like Snapchat, Tik Tok, etc. gaining traction, marketers need to consult (or hire) experts who really understand the different platforms and how they work.”

You might be known for having the best 5 minute-duration videos in the market.

But if you don’t adapt to also being able to create engaging 10 second-duration videos, you might not be reaching millions of potential audiences.

C) Last but most certainly not least, is COMMUNITY.

Brands, publishers, and influencers/creators alike are all seeing the need for building communities of fans and followers.

This is critically important for video marketing because we all know that Vanity Metrics from disparate mass audiences (likes, 3-second video views, etc.) are not sustainable measures of efficacy.

Highly engaged communities, on the other hand, are a marketer’s safeguard to ensure genuine interaction and discussion around your content.

Highly engaged communities share, and comment (and reply to other people’s comments), significantly more than a broad audience, and that leads to favorable sorting by the algorithms, which in turn increases content performance/visibility, which in turn DECREASES the cost of paid media/boosting.

Tiktok is growing fast and brands are still figuring out how to use it for marketing.

Meet Maayan Gorden who has 1.7 million followers on the platform and is also a professional TikTok consultant and coach,

Read on to know more about her and her Tiktok marketing strategies.

1. Tell us about your life journey in brief, Maayan?

I was raised by my 2 jewish parents and grew up in Seattle, keeping kosher and practicing judaism. I went to Seattle Hebrew Academy, a small private jewish school until 5th grade and then switched to an almost all black kids school called Aki Kurose.

For High School I went to a private school called Lakeside in Seattle. After High school I went to Occidental College for a year and a half then I dropped out and started freelance writing.

I dived deep into internet marketing and a started up my first business 2K Industries LLC with my husband Ben (boyfriend at the time). We grew the business for a few years before I switched to graphic design and creating website. I did that for 2 years before falling in love with glassblowing and starting my glass blowing business.

I grew a following on Instagram for 4 years before switching over to TikTok and have since exploded to 1.7 Million followers in just a few months. I now also consult for other businesses on how they can use TikTok for their business or brand.

Top 25 Video Marketing Disruptors (Globally) in 2019

2. What prompted you to take up Tiktok consulting?

I started TikTok Consulting because of my success on the platform coupled with my 10 years experience in internet marketing makes me the perfect person to help businesses understand the social media platform.

I am the oldest in a family of 4 children and have ALWAYS loved teaching.

3. What Tiktok marketing strategies a Brand can adopt?

When coming up with a TikTok marketing strategy, businesses should think about their target customer and what kind of content they consume.

Pick apart and analyze videos from your competitors to find out what about them is drawing attention. Businesses should focus on BRAND MARKETING over sales marketing.

4.  Can you mention your favorite Tiktok marketing campaign so far?

My favorite marketing campaign that I’ve seen so far on TikTok is one to bring awareness to animal cruelty.

There are a lot of social marketing campaigns that I’m a huge fan of. Bringing awareness to important issues is something the platform is really promoting!

5.  What would be your advice to newbies for creating Tiktok Marketing strategy?

My advice for anyone just starting out on TikTok is first CONSUME CONTENT! This will give you an idea of what types of videos are already working on the platform and will be great inspiration for creating your own videos. Consistency with posting would be my second piece of advice.

As of now I am into training or coaching people In video marketing helping them with what works and what doesn’t work in marketing themselves through Videos.

1. Tell us about your life journey, David?

Youtube video marketing - David Walsh (Mr youtube)

My life revolved around my love for Taekwondo. I wanted to be World and Olympic Champion. Competing for Ireland, I needed to travel and train because the resources to be a World and Olympic Champion weren’t there.

This is why I moved to the UK in 1997, and then to Houston, Texas in 2001. I trained with the best people I could to achieve my dream. When not competing at competitions, I would video matches.

People would then ask me for a copy of certain athletes or weight divisions. This happened enough that I thought there could be a business in it. It’s then that I set up TKD DVD in 2003.

I quickly became the biggest Taekwondo Video Production Company in the world, creating Official DVD’s for European and World Championships, and also creating programs for Eurosport which were broadcast to over 40 million people across Europe.

Because of my skills in online marketing, the business evolved into marketing products for other people on the internet.

I used my video skills to create marketing videos and my web development skills to create membership sites for clients, which was more profitable than the DVD production and didn’t involve anywhere near as much traveling.

2. Please share your journey of becoming ‘Mr YouTube’?

In Jan 2013 I had 2 clients come to an end of their contract, and I had no new clients in the pipeline.

January being perhaps the most expensive month of the year didn’t help. My wife was contracting in the Fashion Industry at the time, and there wasn’t any work for her. So I had to provide for both of us…

Lots of doubt began to creep in about my ability to provide for us, whether I was good enough, etc… I woke up one morning and my intuition told me to go for a run…

During my run, I got out of my head and began to ask better questions… Rather than asking “how could I let this happen..?” I asked, “What can I do..?” Then I asked a better question… “What did I do before that worked..?”

It was at that point I remembered I had put up 4 videos on YouTube and those 4 videos brought in $10K worth of business…

Then I asked myself “what the heck was I doing not making more videos?!!!” It was at that point I decided I was going to do this YouTube thing. So I decided rather than creating content around Membership Sites and Product Launches, as I could only do about 15 videos and then I was stuck, I would do YouTube.

So I started with my first video on Feb 13, 2013… quickly grew to 10k Subscribers in 10 months and 100k Subscribers in just over 3 years to the point where I have over 166,000 Subscribers with over 20 million views.

It wasn’t until I joined a Mastermind that I really became “Mr YouTube”. Up to that point, I was still doing membership sites and web design work, with some YouTube stuff on the side, as the web stuff was bringing in the most business.

When I joined the mastermind, Nick James, the guy running the mastermind, told me to drop the membership site stuff and only focus on YouTube. The reason was that there’s no one in the UK that’s dominating the YouTube space and it was wide open for me to take.

So with some reservation, I began to wind down my membership business and began to focus more on YouTube Consulting to today where I’m one of the highest paid YouTube Consultants in the UK and I help entrepreneurs and experts grow their businesses using YouTube.

3. What do you know about YouTube branding which other marketers do not get?

I solely focus on using YouTube for businesses – SME’s.  I don’t focus on being a famous YouTuber or using YouTube for branding for large corporates.  I focus totally on the small guy making videos that bring clients and customers into their business.

So I don’t look at creating viral videos (even though we have made a 34 minute documentary go viral for a client) or prank videos, or stuff like that.  I just focus on creating high value how to content that brings in quality clients and customers.

4. What are the best practices for YouTube video marketing?

Being Consistent, Persistent and Predictable and have a Logical Next Step for your viewers to take that leads them into your business in some way.

5. What YouTube strategy should startup and new age businesses adopt?

The same for any business… Focus on creating value for your ideal customers. Look to serve before you look to sell. Show them you can help them by actually helping them.
